This article will go over the advantages of using CSS as a layout tool for web page design rather than table based layouts which utilize heavily marked up inline HTML tags.
Perhaps the best reason to use CSS is to seperate markup from presentation. CSS is a presentational language whereas HTML is good for structural mark up of web pages. With CSS, the designer can define the documents presentation without touching the markup. They work independent of each other which allows for greater flexibility of visual display; a page can look completely different based how style elements are chosen. For example by changing the style of a font from one central document ie.."stylesheet" the designer can change the look of every font element in the website rather than changing every HTML inline tag within the document. A huge time saver!
CSS pages are considerably lighter and will download faster than typical table heavy mark-up. For high traffic sites this could mean considerable savings in data-transfer, which means lower hosting costs.
CSS allows extreme ease of webpage managability. Typical old school web design consisted of bloated markup and presentational coding within the inline HTML tags. This process is a maintenance nightmare as updates are needed for each and every tag if say, a particular font style needs to be changed, or padding on a paragraph needs to be increased or decreased. It's much simpler to manage from one place, say an external style sheet and the let the style changes "cascade" across the targeted elements.
Think of CSS based layout as a finely tuned team, carring out orders from their coach, whereas table based layout reminds me of building something out of lego blocks. Pages built solely with tables ( nested table after table) soon get extremely complex especially when you've been away from the site and then updates are needed. They are as tedious to build as they are to update and maintain.
It's easy for you, the designer to get side-tracked into content management especially with table based markup. You may be the only one who can quickly know where the content goes! With CSS and standards based design, you can provide simple mark-up rules for the content team to follow knowing that they will work well into the project.
